This breed was crossed with Bloodhounds in the late 1800s. For what purpose? To increase the dog’s size. The result was then crossed with the Artesien Normand to breed the version of Basset that you see today.

Basset hound is known as a clown in the canine world. These dogs are intelligent, funny, sociable, loving and loyal. They love being around other dogs and are friendly with strangers.

Basset hound dogs love going for long walks, play in the yard and watch TV with you. Being pack hounds, they find it very uncomfortable when left in the house for long hours. But remain calm if accompanied by a cat or dog.

These dogs are strong-willed and very stubborn. They will find a way to get their thing done. But Bassets can often get into trouble if not leashed as they follow a scent that interest them which can lead into a dangerous situation, like a road.

Basset dogs get very lazy and sleep long hours. Bassets love children. If anything, you'll need to protect your Basset from being ridden or otherwise tormented by children.

Verdict: A Basset who is treated harshly will simply become more stubborn. Your best bet is to keep training interesting. Bassets will develop selective hearing if there's something more exciting to pay attention to.
